オンライン辞書サイトは、収録言語や機能に応じて多種多様。まず最初に、無料で
使えるサイトをご紹介する。中でも大手ポータルサイトは、ほぼすべてがなんらかの
辞書を提供中だ。
■LYCOSディクショナリ, http://dic.lycos.co.jp/
小学館の発行する「大辞泉」「プログレッシブ英和中辞典」など国語・英和・和英・
新語の辞書4つを公開。また百科事典「日本大百科全書」の各項目別文字数を500字程
度に抑えたコンパクト版も閲覧できる。

三省堂の「大辞林 第二版」「EXCEED 英和辞典」などが利用可能。また「デイリー
新語辞典」から抜粋した注目の言葉を一覧表示しており、読み物としても楽しめる。
■Yahoo! JAPAN, http://www.yahoo.co.jp/
Yahoo! JAPANでの辞書検索は、インターネット検索などとシームレスに行なえるの
が特徴。検索結果表示画面の右上にある「辞書」のリンクをクリックすれば入力語に
応じて、国語・類語・英和・和英辞書から検索した結果を表示してくれる。

インフォシークでは、トップページに専用ボタンを配置し、辞書検索機能へのアク
セスが簡便なのが特徴。三省堂の提供による国語・英和・和英辞書の内容を直接検索

自由国民社が発行する「現代用語の基礎知識 2001年版」のデータを収蔵。約2年前
の版となるが、各項目の解説文が充実しており、資料性は高いだろう。国際情勢から
風俗・流行まで、解説分野も幅広い。
無料で使える辞書サイト～マスコミ・出版・その他編
続いては出版社や英会話スクールのWebサイト内に用意された辞書検索機能を紹介
する。ポータル系の辞書サイトでは国語辞書と和英辞書を同時に検索できる機能など
が目立ったが、こちらのカテゴリでは単一の辞書が多い代わりに、例文等が比較的充
実している。
■三省堂 Web Dictionary, http://www.sanseido.net/
多くのポータルサイトに辞書データを提供する三省堂のサイト。「デイリーコンサ
イス」シリーズの各辞典が無料で検索できる。またより多くの辞書が同時に検索でき
る有料会員制サービスも用意されている。
■英辞郎 on the Web（スペースアルク）, http://www.alc.co.jp/
外国語学習関連のビジネスを手がけるアルクのサイト。トップページ左上に辞書検
索窓が常設されている。英和・和英の2種類が1つの検索フォームから検索可能だ。単 語解説に加え、用例が非常に充実しているので、学習向けに適しているだろう。

こちらもアルクのサイト内にある、別の辞書機能。「ビジネス英語辞典」「語源辞
典」の2種類が左フレーム内のリンクから利用できる。また英文ページのURLを入力すると、各単語の習熟重要度を調べられる機能「どこでも辞書 SVL12000」がユニーク。
■クロスランゲージ辞書参照サービス, http://www.nova.co.jp/
翻訳システム開発業のクロスランゲージが提供する辞書参照サービス。「辞書参照
サービス」はトップページの左メニューに用意されたボタンからアクセス可能。数学・
物理から法律、エンターテインメントまで21カテゴリの英和・和英辞書の見出し語が
検索できる。例文などはないが、用語の使い分けを調べるのに便利だろう。
■ハイパー漢字検索, http://www.theta.co.jp/kanji/index.html
シータ社のデータベース「ハイパーワープロ漢字辞典」をWebサイト上から利用で
きるサービス。部首や総画数から漢字の読みやJISコードを調べられる。また逆の検
索方法も可能だ。
より詳細なデータ集めに～有料辞書サイト
ここからは各種の有料サービスを紹介する。ほとんどの場合、同時検索できる辞書
が増えるほか、辞書自体の出版年度が新しいものになる。とくに新語・流行語系の辞
書が多くラインナップされている。
■JapanKnowledge, http://www.japanknowledge.com/
小学館のグループ会社「ネットアドバンス」による検索サービス。1つのキーワー
ドを入力すると、21種類の各種辞書・データベースを横断検索してくれる「ワンルッ
ク」サービスが最大の特徴だ。入会金2,500円、月会費が1,500円。

集英社が毎年発刊する最新用語辞典「イミダス」をオンライン利用できる。利用料
金は1カ月200円で、ほかに1日だけ利用できる100円のプランもある。なお決済には、
各種ISPの料金支払いサービスが利用できる。
■ネットで百科＠Home, http://ds.hbi.ne.jp/
平凡社の「世界大百科事典」をオンライン検索できるサービス。料金は利用日数・
ISPなどに応じて異なるが、概ね1カ月1,500～2,000円。ニュース映像、マルチメディ
ア年鑑などの追加コンテンツも利用できるブロードバンド対応コースもある。

朝日新聞の新語辞典「知恵蔵」の2002年版を検索可能。1週間単位でまとめられた
新聞記事も収録している。利用料金は1日ならば100円。月額で240円。
IT系新語に備えよう
日々生まれていく言葉の中でも、その大半が横文字・アルファベット略語のIT系用
語は特に難解だ。日々更新できるオンライン辞書は、まさにこの分野に最適なものと
言えるだろう。
■アスキー デジタル用語辞典, http://yougo.ascii24.com/
コンピュータ関連用語を網羅。各項目語は、おもにアスキーが発行する雑誌・書籍
類からピックアップされている。検索結果画面の関連語リンクが便利。
■情報・通信辞典 e-Words, http://e-words.jp/
インセプトによる情報・通信用語事典。トップページからは単純な読み仮名検索だ
けでなく、分野別検索も簡単に行なえる。またInternet Explorerのコンテキストメ
ニューを利用したツール「右クリックe-Words」を公開している。
■IBM 情報処理用語英和対訳集, http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/manuals/nlsdic/nlsdic.html
日本IBM制作のデータベース。同社のマニュアルや画面作成に際して構成されたも
ので、専門用語の英和・和英の対訳が検索できる。
変わり種データベースサイト
ここまではおもに学術的な要素が強いオンライン辞書サービスを紹介してきたが、
次に挙げるのは、用語集もしくはデータベース的な側面が強いもの。読み物としても
楽しめる。
■野村證券 証券用語解説集, http://www.nomura.co.jp/terms/index.html
「前場・後場」「アニュアルレポート」など、ニュース・新聞でよく見聞きする証
券用語の意味を調べられる。項目数が非常に多く、利用も無料なので、ブックマーク
に加えておいて損はないだろう。

政財界から芸術・芸能まで、各分野の著名人の生年や経歴などを掲載。原稿執筆時
点での収録者数は8,200名だとか。各個人の公式サイトリンク集も圧巻。
■拡張子辞典, http://www.jisyo.com/viewer/
PC上で利用するファイル名とは切っても切れない「拡張子」を紹介。OS標準の拡張
子から、各アプリケーション専用のものまで、幅広く解説している。
■日経goo, http://nikkei.goo.ne.jp/
日本経済新聞提供による企業情報データベース。一部コンテンツは有料だが、各企
業の基礎情報・解説文は無料で閲覧できる。

今回はおもに日本語で構成されたサイトを紹介したが、海外の言語も含めたより総

The most mentioned online dictionary was www.alc.co.jp --Especially praised for having many contemporary used words and slang. Problems mentioned: Vocab tends to be very current and a tad limited in scope -- so very short on old and/or obscure usages, and I sometimes suspect it has been politically airbrushed (this may just be my "old Japan hand" paranoia, but to give a concrete example, it almost never has entries for common Showa Era ideological/propaganda/military terms that are readily available in the old reliable (but time-consuming) "Green Monster" (Kenkyusha 4th Edition J-E Dictionary).

Electronic Dictionaries
http://shop.alc.co.jp/cnt/eijiro/ is a user created dictionary, heavy on examples and very contemporary English and Japanese. You can also search on phrases rather than discreet vocabulary. I find that this is often to get the appropriate contextual meaning rather than simply the "dictionary definitio" of the words.

Casio EX-word floris consists of 23 dictionaries, including Kojien, Mypedia, Kanjigen, Genius EJ, Obunsha zenyaku kogo jiten, and a bunch of things I don't use but had hoped to like speeches and letter writing samples. It does do the "superjump" feature so I can quickly look up words in an entry I don't understand. Casio has a wide range of offerings, and I made my choice based on the classical dictionary.

Aiko Trading Company gives Canon Wordtank product comparisions of features, pricing, availability.
Some of you may know well by now. Jack Halpern's The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary is now available in an electronic edition. It runs on Casio's EX-Word, either the XD-SW series or XD-GW series. These models include the Tegaki panel. Be careful: earlier models of EX-Word do not have the Tegaki panel, and will not work with the software. You will need to buy the hardware and software separately. Since I only wanted to use this Kanji
dictionary and did not care what other dictionaries it came with, I bought the least expensive one for about 25,000 yen through Amazon.co.jp while I was in Japan.
The dictionary software comes in two formats - CD-ROM or SD Card. The SD Card version costs twice as much, so I purchased CD-ROM... runs only on the Japanese version of Windows... [with friend's help] I managed to install the software to EX-Word... instructions in English, and the Japanese instructions were not that clear, either.
